BowTie

Stainless steel tie for restraining bowed walls

BowTie is the solution to the problem of bulging and bowing walls.

Walls may bulge or bow for a variety of reasons. For example, external walls may bow if they have not been sufficiently restrained to floor joists, beams or partitions. Similarly, they may bulge or bow as a result increasing loads, vibrations arising from machinery, traffic or seismic events or if they are insufficiently thick relative to their height.

The BowTie system involves driving one end of a long series self-tapping, stainless steel, helical BowTie either into end-on joists or through parallel joists and fixing the exposed end of the tie into the bowed wall. Depending on the circumstances, the tie may be either dry fixed into the wall or bonded into it with high performance Helifix EpoxyPlus TE2 resin or HeliBond grout.

  • Mark the position of the joist centre on the external wall and drill a clearance hole (typically 12mm) through the wall.

  • BowTie Installation.jpg2
  • Insert the BowTie into the support tool fitted to an SDS rotary hammer drill (set to hammer) and drive it into the joist end to a depth of at least 75mm. Fit the nozzle of the resin applicator over the end of the exposed end of the tie, inject EpoxyPlus TE2 resin to fill the hole, allow to gel and make good.

INSTALLATION INTO PARALLEL JOISTS

  • Mark the positions for the BowTie clearance holes on the external wall.

  • Drill the clearance holes (normally 12mm) through the masonry and first joist.

  • Insert the BowTie into the support tool fitted to an SDS rotary hammer drill (set to light hammer only) and drive it into the second joist.

  • Fit the nozzle of the resin applicator over the end of the exposed end of the tie, inject EpoxyPlus TE2 resin to fill the hole, and allow to gel.
